Trifecta – Mask

It had all happened so suddenly.

One minute a volcano had erupted, the next the entire US was without a food source, and he was driving in the middle of a desert that looked more like a snowfield, to a place where it was known that crop seeds lay safe inside a warehouse.

Of course, it would take much more than just the crops themselves; America would need a place to raise them, and of course the government had greenhouses all over the country for that. But there was one more danger out here, dangerously close to ground zero…

Zombies, previously creatures of fiction, were now fact, destroyed by the supernatural volcano deep within the heart of Yellowstone. It just so happened that the storehouse was in that same region, almost the same state, as the famous national park.

The people once known as and laughed at Doomsday Preppers might yet save the human race. He tightened his air mask; even in this regal limo, he didn’t feel safe.

It wasn’t a wide open area like the Sahara out there, nothing but yellow sands and one solitary road. This desert was dirtier and rockier than that, just on the edge. And just when the President finally thought he was safe… this road trip was about to get a lot rockier.

He pulled his seatbelt tighter against him as the awkward, long car was sent over high and low rock hills, landing smoothly or jarringly each time. They had to get away, for the good of their country. But no matter how fast they sped, the zombies were somehow faster.

Darkness fell, even through the tinted windows, and they knew they had failed. They had caught up. All the dead and rotting bodies pressed up against the windows, smashing them, pale hands reaching out.

“The President!” called the driver, and he could see the flash of a phone. “We won’t make it! You have to –”

The line went dead.

Friday Fictioneers – Winding

copyright - Jennifer Pendergast

The day was dawning. Dawn was heading up at high speed, racing for the top of the tower.

The double doors at the top crashed open with a clatter. Looking around briefly, she saw the clouds turning the whole world grey. Soon the sun would light them golden, the lightbulb inside the building a cheap imitation of it.

She ran around the barrier, searching. Finally she found a last set of stairs, smaller and narrower than the large flight behind her. The cold of the white side rails rippled in her hands.

She climbed to the top. He was ready.

Flash fiction for Friday Fictioneers.

BlogFestivus #8 – Blitzen

Blitzen was going to show them all what a blitz he really was. He was going to have fun, and they’d all miss out.

But this heat…

He might have to travel down further south. Summer was too hot for a reindeer to have fun in for too long. But Blitzen was determined to outplay the other reindeer. Soon they would be begging to be his friend.

He caught a glimpse of a flashing hoof. No… he wasn’t going to let Donner watch over him again, as if he was still a foal, and an orphaned one at that.

All he wanted was to have fun. But mother figure Donner was going to ruin it all for him.

He ran off at a gallop, determined to lose his trail. But Donner was out of hiding now, chasing after him quickly. Donner was gaining ground just a bit, but all Blitzen had to do was outlast him in this heat, and he was home free.

Maybe he could visit the beach when he slipped past Donner. No doubt the humans would love him wherever he went here. He could go shopping, and they’d be all over him.

He could have a real adventure here, and Donner was ruining it.

Donner was edging up his side. They were taking up the entire sidewalk now, the humans simply gawking after them.

Blitzen veered onto the grass, relief for his aching hooves.

Donner caught him that moment.
